FACTS ABOUT SKIN CANCERS
Skin Cancer is an abnormally growing cell from different layers of the skin, including Melanoma.
2 in 3 Australians will be diagnosed with Skin Cancer by the age of 70.
The three common types of Skin Cancers are:
- Basal Cell Carcinoma (BBC)
- Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)
- Melanoma.
Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)
Is the most common type of skin cancer; these usually appear on the face, neck or upper back.
They rarely spread to other parts of the body. Once growing they spread locally.
These Cancers can be removed.
Sqamous Cell Carcinomas (SCC)
Are found in the sun exposed area like the face, upper and lower limbs. They do have some risk of spreading to
other parts of the body. They can present as rough crusted spots.
Melanoma
Is the most serious type of Skin Cancer. Melanoma can present as dark, raised,black and sometimes
pink spots. Melanoma if detected early has got a good outcome.
Solar Keratosis
Also called sunspots are rough patches found on the face and arms. They can also present in areas
where there is long term sun exposure. Sun spots have potential to change into Squamous Cell Carcinoma.
Freezing with liquid nitrogen is all needed to treat them.
Also some creams can help to sure these spots.
Moles
Most of the moles are benign in nature. There are different types of moles.
Melanoma is a Cancer of pigment cells. They are dangerous and need to be removed.
Atypical Molesor Dysplastic Naevi
They are not Melanoma but do have different shapes and colours.
Usually these moles are monitored regularly and sometimes removed if very suspicious.
Junctional and Compound Naevi
These are the most common and benign moles. They are piglet brown moles.
Congenital Naevi
Are lesions that have been present since birth. They vary in size and are usually benign.
Indradermal Naevi (IDN)
These are raised moles mostly on the face; they usually are safe and can be observed,
and removed easily for cosmetic reasons.
